Modern Refuge

| East Hampton, NY

Surrounded by preserve and moments from the bay, this East Hampton residence uses bold architectural contrast, warm oak and tactile neutrals to create a modern refuge that feels protected, open and deeply connected to its setting.

A modern house with black exterior with a wooden entryway, surrounded by green lawn, small trees, bushes, and a gravel pathway under a partly cloudy blue sky.

Contrast, Comfort and a House in the Landscape

The renovation takes its cues from the property's unusual privacy. Wrapped by mature landscape and preserve, the house is conceived as a sequence of calm interiors opening toward trees, terraces and water. Black-stained and natural cedar give the exterior a graphic presence, while generous glazing draws daylight and views deep into the home.

Inside, wide-plank white oak floors soften a palette of white, gray and black. The double-height living room is anchored by a porcelain-clad fireplace, with clean architectural lines balanced by relaxed upholstery, reclaimed wood and personal art. The effect is one of contrast without severity: crisp, but never cold.

Two outdoor chairs with gray cushions, a small round concrete side table, large planters with green shrubs, and tall trees in the background next to a swimming pool.

The kitchen pairs rift-oak cabinetry with pale stone and integrated appliances, maintaining the material discipline of the surrounding rooms while supporting the realities of daily life and entertaining. Bedrooms and baths become progressively quieter, using natural textures and restrained finishes to create a sense of retreat.

Beyond the main rooms, the house expands into a flexible lower level and a series of outdoor spaces, including terraces, pool and spa. Each is treated as part of the same composition rather than as a separate amenity.

The result is a home defined as much by atmosphere as by appearance—a place where strong lines, tactile materials and the surrounding landscape come together with an understated sense of ease.
